Acne-safe makeupGuess what? Checking the ingredients in your blush and bronzer is just as important as checking the ingredients in your foundation. If you suffer from acne, you simply cannot get away with putting anything on your face before ensuring there are no pore-clogging ingredients involved in your product.

Some might argue that bronzers or blushes do not go directly on your face, they are a second layer after your foundation and therefore do not need to be completely acne safe. This argument is incorrect.

We know, NARS, MAC, Laura Mercier and Bare Minerals all make really beautiful shades of blush and bronzers. Trust us, we defiantly understand why you want to wear them, but you simply cannot. The pore-clogging ingredients will find their way into your pores and cause breakouts no matter how many layers of other products lie under them.

Please read on to see why these products are likely to cause breakouts.

NARS

Unfortunately all of NARS blushes and bronzers are a no-no for acne suffers. The Bronzers contain Ethyhexyl Palmitate, which is on the pore-clogging list. NARS blushes contain Laureth-4, which will make you break out.

MAC

MAC pressed Blush is made with D&C Red #30. Don’t waste your time hunting through the pore clogging list to see if this is safe, it’s not. D&C Red #30 will aggravate your acne.

Bare Minerals

Now this is probably going to come as a shock to most of you, because Bare Minerals have long been considered pretty close to completely acne safe. In fact, before the arrival of our favorite make up line - Priia Cosmetics, we recommended all Bare Minerals products to our clients.

Now, we know that the Everyday Minerals Blush and READY Blush both contains Lauroyl Lysine, which is a pore clogging ingredient. You can also find Bismuth in some Bare Mineral blushes and bronzers, this will irritate acne suffers skin.

The most important thing to understand about your blushes and bronzers is that they need to be acne safe products before you put them on your face, this means you need to ensure that they do not contain any pore-clogging ingredients. Do this by consulting our pore clogging ingredient list every time you buy a new product.

If you want to skip the hassle of all that, our Jil Goorman Beauty makeup line was created specifically for acne sufferers, so you never have to worry about ingredients. This makeup line really is a saving grace for those of us who tend to breakout, you can trust these blushes and bronzers.

If you would like to learn more about managing your acne and ultimately achieving clear skin, please call SkinTherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake City. We would love to see you for a consultation.

Coconut oil has exploded in the beauty market this year and while you probably have some friends that swear by the stuff for moisture, smell, etc. - it is a no no for acne sufferers.

With the popularity of coconut oil, many people have preached that this creamy oil can clear acne among all it's other uses. Unfortunately this claim is not true. The thought behind coconut oil and clearing acne is that coconut oil contains acids with antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial properties that help kill yeast and parasites. This boosts your immune system to fight infections. In theory, this fight against infections would also fight against acne breakouts.

We know, it would be such a simple fix if coconut oil did help acne sufferers, but this theory is flawed because of the molecule in coconut oil. It is a very small molecule and it will CLOG your pores. Simple as that -  PLEASE BE AWARE - coconut oil is going to clog your pores, it is highly comedogenic. We have seen clients who have used the oil before coming into the clinic with increased breakouts where they slathered straight coconut oil or products containing the oil on their skin.

You need to stay away from any form of this stuff if you are acne prone! This includes shampoos, lotions, makeup products, etc.  Do not use coconut masks for your hair and stay away from "off the shelf" products that contain the oil.

We suggest you consult our list of pore clogging ingredients before buying any type of beauty product from the store and never let the hype of coconut oil touch your skin.

Below, we have listed some popular hair products that contain coconut oil. Please notice that coconut oil is in all types of hair products- including masques, mists, leave in conditioners, etc. As an acne sufferer you are required to check all ingredients in all of your products, even if they are the same brand.

Pureology Precious Oil Softening Hair Masque

The Pureology Precious Oil Softening Hair Masque is not safe for acne prone skin because the masque uses coconut oil to repair fading hair color and generally dry hair. This product is a great example of changes in product ingredients throughout the same brand. Pureology does have  acne safe shampoo and conditioner that many acne sufferers use daily. If you would have just assumed that this hair masque was safe because it was made by Pureology, you would have encountered breakouts within a few uses.  Always check the ingredients, even on products you have used before.

John Masters Organics Citrus & Neroli Detangler

Coconut oil is one of 17 organic ingredients in this leave-in conditioner that detangles, hydrates, and strengthens hair. But will not be a friend to anyone who suffers from acne.

Carol's Daughter Monoi Oil Sacred Strengthening Serum

The headlining "up and coming" new oil called  monoi oil, comes from an exotic mixture of Coconut oil and flowers. Not a hair oil I would recommend if you're acne prone.

Kiehl's Amino Acid Conditioner

Kiehl's is a well known brand that works wonders on most skin and hair, but this conditioner will not work to keep acne sufferers safe from breakouts. This hydrating and lightweight conditioner contains coconut oil and will cause breakouts around the scalp.

Aveda's Sun Care Soins Soleil

This water resistant spray contains coconut oil, palm oil and shea butter. Again, not safe for acne prone skin even though it's a hair care product.

If you want to clear your acne, you need to use the correct products for your skin as well as your hair. SkintherapySkincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake City can put you on the right path towards clear skin find us at UtahAcneClinic.com and on Instagram at Skintherapyacneclinic.

Here is a bit of a guide to safe and unsafe lip balms for those that are acne prone:

The most important thing when picking out lip balm is to make sure to check the active and inactive ingredients before you start wearing it. Some lip balms will be okay with their active ingredients, but will contain pore clogging, non-active ingredients.

How to Get Rid of Body Acne

Out of all the types of acne, body acne can cause acne sufferers the most heartbreak and embarrassment. It is not uncommon for people with breakouts on their backs and chests to shy away from public outings. If you have suffered from body acne, you've probably thought twice about wearing a strapless dress to a school dance or going shirtless at the pool. You probably constantly fear that people will notice your acne.

It really doesn't seem fair does it? As if suffering from acne on your face isn't enough, you also have breakouts on your back and chest? Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic understands and  we want to help you clear your body acne! We want you to be happy and confident in your own skin and we have the knowledge on body acne, as well as a successful technique in clearing breakouts to promise real results. Please read below to see a little bit about how we help clear client's skin
when they are suffering from body acne.

What is the first step in clearing your skin?

Like all acne, understanding the type of acne that you have on your body is the key to treating it. This is why it is just as important to work with an Acne Specialist while treating your body acne as it is when treating the acne on your face.

Once we understand the type of acne you are suffering from, we start a program of the right amount of exfoliation and topical antibacterial action to begin the process of preventing the formation of micro acne lesions.

If you have red body acne that is painful and pustular, we will start you on a program of less aggressive exfoliation and more aggressive antibacterial work.

If your body acne is more timid with a non-inflamed, bumpy texture and lots of build up and blackheads - you need to be on a program of high exfoliation and less antibacterial work. Different variations of our scrubs, benzoyl peroxide creams, mandelic serums and other alpha-hydroxy acids are going to kick your body acne to the curb. You just need to make sure to use them in the right way, every morning and evening.

Some extra tips and habits to help clear body acne.

  1. Make sure you are washing your shirts and sheets in acne safe detergent like Cheer -Free, Arm and Hammer Free. Detergents that are fragrance free are best.
  2. Wear breathable fabrics. You want airflow to your problem areas and as little sweat as possible. (This is especially important while you are sleeping.)
  3. Stay away from whey or soy protein. We often see inflamed body acne in relation to frequent use of whey or soy protein shakes and/or steroid use in body builders or athletes. These

products act like hormones in the body and if taken in excess can trigger acne flare-ups.

Should you be coming in for professional treatment when fighting your body acne?

Absolutely! We usually see the best results in our clients after three months of consecutive professional treatment and consistent use of our topical products. Extractions will absolutely help clear your body acne!

Remember, body acne can be successfully cleared by taking the correct steps and using the right products on your chest or back acne. Come see us at Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The best way to clear acne is to fight your breakouts with the right products. To be successful in controlling acne you may need to implement more aggressive products like creams and serums with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Although these products are the key to success in clearing your skin, they can cause you to dry out.

Most acne sufferers think that drying their skin out is the best way to be aggressive in fighting acne. The reality is that dryness is not the answer to clearing skin, but rather a consequence from product use. Dryness is common in all people who are fighting acne, especially in the winter.

So, the real key to success in clearing your skin is to fight your breakouts and your dryness at the same time! You need to be doing this because dry skin actually aids in breakouts. When your skin is dry, you naturally produce more oil. This is because your skin is trying to make up for lost moisture. Excess oil is never good for acne sufferers.

If you are working on clearing your acne on your own, there are some simple things that you can do to keep moisture in your skin. (We suggest these habits to our clients as well.)

  1. Make sure to drink a lot of water.
  2. Shower in warm water, not hot!
  3. Don't over cleanse. Only wash your face in the morning and night. If you are working out, use toner to get rid of extra sweat and make sure to moisturize afterwards.
  4. Make sure to always use moisturizer, even if your face does not feel dry.

Just like clearing acne, keeping moisturized is easiest and most successful when working with an Acne Specialist. Our clinic located in Salt Lake City will help you find the perfect balance of acne fighting ingredients and moisture. We will be with you every step of the way and make slight changes in your regimen to ensure the best progress and clearing outcome in your skin. Here's a more detailed look at the steps we take to keep our client's skin from drying out while fighting their acne.

  1. We understand that some dryness will happen while using our products. These products are not sold over-the-counter so they will be stronger. While it is important to realize that there will be some dryness, we can help you manage the dryness while your skin is getting used to the products.
  2. We will ease you into using the stronger products. You need to take your time and use lighter products before you start using the most aggressive creams and serums. We will ensure that you are taking baby steps so your skin doesn't have severe reactions.
  3. We will put you on a water-based hydrator right away. Our Moisture Gel is a great layer to add under your sunscreen in the morning and benzoyl peroxide at night. This is a moisturizer without oil that will not cause the benzoyl peroxide to stop doing its job.
  4. We might suggest that you take a 1-3 day break from your routine if your skin is getting extremely dry. After your break, you will start right where you left off. Although a break may be helpful, too many breaks will stop you from clearing. If you have chronic dryness, we will change up your daily product routine and ensure you are not drying out while you are clearing up.
At  Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake City, we are here to help you clear your skin in the best way possible. This includes keeping your skin from drying out. Please give us a call to schedule an appointment today!

In our last post, we introduced the first set of lifestyle changes that you will need to achieve clear skin. In this post, we will go over the last 4 changes you need to make in your everyday program to keep your pores clean and skin clear. We urge you to start practicing these habits every day, as soon as possible - but we do warn you that these lifestyle changes are not enough to clear your skin. You also need to start a guided regimen of extractions and product use right away. When you pair these lifestyle changes with our clearing program, you will achieve clear skin.

1. Make sure you are using the correct birth control.
While many people assume that birth control will automatically clear your skin, the reality is that many birth controls can actually cause your skin to break out. Overall, it is best to avoid low-estrogen birth control pills. Please see our post onAcne and Birth Control to learn more about the safest birth control methods for acne sufferers. In general, we suggest staying away from IUD's, implants and birth control shots. Please consult our list of safe birth control methods before choosing your pill.

2. Always, always, always check the ingredients of your cosmetics.
If you suffer from acne, you cannot use cosmetics OR hair products that contain pore-clogging ingredients. Products that contain pore clogging ingredients will absolutely make you break out. Please see our list of pore clogging ingredients and make sure to check the products you are buying every time you purchase them.

3. Wear your sunscreen!
While the best way to keep your skin safe from the sun is to limit your exposure, we do understand that sun exposure is just a part of life. Really though, the sun is great and the best things happen outdoors, so if you can't limit your time in the sun - make sure to wear sunscreen every day. We ask you to do this because sun exposure damages the follicle, causes hyper pigmentation, skin cancer and premature aging. Too much sun exposure can also cause "solar acne" later in life. Acne sufferers also see more breakouts in warm climates with heat and humidity.

4. Protect your skin when you swim!
When swimming in pools make sure to protect your skin with Aquaphor. Most pools will contain Iodides and Chlorine because of their disinfectants. The Iodides and Chlorine can remain in the

water and cause breakouts for swimmers. If you protect your skin with a layer of Aquaphor, you are less likely to breakout and irritate your acne prone skin.

Remember that you should be making these changes while working with a Skincare and Acne Specialist who can guide your journey to a clear complexion by implementing deep cleansing treatments and finding the right product for your acne type. Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic in Salt Lake City can help.  Give us a call

If we have said it once, we will say it a million times again - the best way to clear acne is to consistently use the correct products. While we absolutely suggest using  these products to keep your pores clear, there are a few things you can do at home that will help with your breakouts while using our product regimen.

Over the next two posts, we are going to discuss a few lifestyle changes that are proven to support our clearing process and keep your pores clean. You should be making these changes while working with Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake City. We will add safe extractions and a guided program of product use to your new lifestyle choices and your acne won't stand a chance against the both of us together!

Here are the first 4 changes you need to make at home. Keep an eye out for our next post - where we will discuss the last 4 lifestyle changes. All together, these 8 new habits will become essential in clearing your skin.

1.    Stay away from iodides like iodized salt.
You've probably heard that staying away from chocolate or greasy foods will help keep your skin clear, but those aren't the most dangerous foods for acne sufferers. In reality, iodides are the real problem. Please watch out for food, vitamins and sports drinks that contain iodides, iodine or potassium iodides. This includes too much shellfish, seaweed, fast foods and dairy products.

2. No "high androgen" foods.
Foods that are "high androgen" include peanuts, peanut oil, peanut butter, corn oil, wheat germ, shellfish & organ meats. These contain hormones that irritate acne. Skip the peanut butter on your morning toast from now on! Almond butter is a better choice.

3.  Consult our list of pore clogging ingredients when buying your cosmetics.
You need to start looking at all the ingredients in your makeup, body wash and hair products. Stay away from products that contain these ingredients. We suggest using Priia Cosmetics, which you can get at the Skintherapy Acne Clinic.

4. Change the way you do laundry.
First, please only use fragrance-free detergents such as Cheer Free, All Free & Clear, Tide Free or Arm & Hammer Free. Make sure to check your detergents like you check the ingredients in your cosmetics. You also need to eliminate all fabric softeners, especially on your pillow cases. Fabric softeners leave a waxy residue on your sheets that can clog pores on those of us who are acne prone. We suggest using dryer balls if you are still worried about static in your laundry.

In the end, lifestyle changes can be just as important to your clearing process as our products. You will need both to achieve clear skin and we will provide continual support to you in both areas. Please give us a call and schedule your appointment to learn more about clearing your skin!

If you suffer from cystic acne you're facing a few upsides and a few downsides. Cystic acne is the least common type of acne, so if you are getting inflammed breakouts, your biggest downside is that you are that 1 in 1,000 statistic that has to deal with more noticeable cysts and quite a bit more pain. Although these types of breakouts are more uncommon than others, they are actually the easiest/quickest type of acne to clear - so your biggest upside is that you will be clear and it will happen sooner for you than it happens for most others.

If you are a woman, the downside to cystic acne is that you will see the worst of it on a monthly basis - according to your menstrual cycle. If you are a man, the biggest downside is that you are generally more likely to suffer from cystic acne rather than non-cystic. Again though, the biggest upside in all of this, for anybody, is that cystic acne is ultimately easier to clear than any other type of acne.

If cystic acne is the easiest type of acne

to clear, do I still need help from a professional?

While cystic acne is easier to clear, it is also the most sensitive clearing process. This is why you need professional help. If you suffer from cystic acne and you do not treat your skin correctly during the clearing process, you could end up with pitted or indented scars. These pitted scars are extremely hard & expensive to treat after you have achieved clear skin.

You will cause yourself pitted or indented scars if you pick at your blemishes or cause more stress to your already inflamed skin. While not picking your skin is up to you, we can help you use the most beneficial products to clear your skin without putting stress on your inflammation. At Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake City, we can ensure that you use the best anti-inflammatory products in the safest and most effective way. We use the most effective ingredients for cystic acne and put you on a guided regimen of mandelic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. We also use sulfur in some cases to help bring down inflammation and redness.

Is there anything that I can do

to help my Cystic Acne on my own?

We highly suggest icing for cystic acne, this will help with inflammation tremendously. We also suggest minimizing your dairy and cheese intake if you are trying to clear any type of acne at all, but especially if your acne is inflamed. Overall, there are many lifestyle changes that can help with cystic acne and we will go over them with you on your first visit to the clinic!

By working with an acne specialist, you are ensuring a safe way to clear your cystic acne with the least probability of scarring - we can promise you that. If you work on clearing your skin on your own - you will have no resources to help keep your skin clear and scar free.

Call Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic today to make your appointment and start clearing your cystic acne.

The Real Deal on Cystic Acne

Now that we've talked about the different types of non-inflamed acne, it's time to dig into cystic acne. Unlike blackheads and whiteheads, cystic acne causes inflammation as well as pimples. This inflammation can turn into a cyst and will take about 90 days to run its full course. Cystic acne can be painful and the pain generally lasts as long as the cyst is active. Like all acne, cystic acne happens when a person has the inherited tendency to break out, but they also need to have the inherited tendency of inflammation. Acne cysts often resemble boils or nodules that are deeper pockets underneath the skin generally filled with white blood cells. At the surface they may present as a shallow looking whitehead at times but not always. This type of acne has a tendency to scar very easily.

In general, cystic acne seems to be receptive to antibacterial and anti-inflammatory topical products. No harsh scrubbing or mechanical exfoliation should be used with cystic acne.  We also recommend a few different types of supplements to help with the inflammation. Icing is also a great tool to help relieve the pain and reduce redness.
Folks with cystic acne often wait the longest to seek serious help with their breakouts because it can be less noticeable to other people, but it is actually rather important to treat this type of acne as soon as possible. This is because the longer the inflammation lasts, the more likely you are to scar. Since this type of acne sits under the skin, it is actually more common for a patient to come in for the pain, rather than for appearance purposes. We do urge anyone fighting cystic acne to get in for help right away. We do still see a lot of redness and irritation with cystic acne, just less bumps and pimples.

If you are suffering from cystic acne please give  Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake City a call and start your clearing process today.

In our last post, we talked about what whiteheads are in comparison to other types of breakouts and pimples. In this post, we'd like to take some time to talk about the basics of clearing up whiteheads and how to do that in the safest way possible.

Whiteheads can be one of the most difficult types of acne to maintain a clear complexion with and the most effective way to rid yourself of whiteheads for good is to be super aggressive. The aggressiveness that is needed to maintain a clear complexion can often be dangerous for your skin.

If you are an acne sufferer, who deals with whiteheads you've probably had re-occurrences with your breakouts many times with many different products. Whiteheads often come back after about 3 weeks or so of using new products. This is because your skin gets used to products and then you loose all of your acne stopping powers.

The truth is that getting rid of whiteheads can be a more difficult process than you think and it takes a lot of work. This is why using an acne specialist is so crucial. To ensure that you are maintaining clear skin, without whiteheads - you need to follow an aggressive treatment plan. This plan includes habitual use of strong ingredients like mandelic acid, glycolic acid, vitamin A and benzoyl peroxide.

At the Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Salt Lake, we can help you use the best products in the most beneficial ways. The key to banning whiteheads is to ensure that you are using the strongest products that your skin can tolerate. This is where we see danger in clearing whiteheads - using these products in the wrong way can severely dry out your skin. With many years of experience we are confident that we can create a treatment plan for each of our clients that is both safe and effective for clearing whiteheads.

Although these products are effective in producing and maintaining clear skin, they can cause major irritation to skin if used in the wrong way. While we do suggest an aggressive approach in treating whiteheads, we do not suggest going it alone. Please let us help you achieve clear skin the the safest and most effective way possible.

whiteheads on the chinWhen fighting acne, it is important to understand that acne and pimples come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the most talked about blemishes are blackheads and whiteheads. We have talked a bit about blackheads on here, but we'd like to touch on whiteheads.

As an acne specialist, I have heard a lot of different opinions on what whiteheads are and how to prevent them. Some folks simply think that whiteheads are the opposite of blackheads - while others think that whiteheads are a completely different type of acne all together. Read on to see what whiteheads actually are and learn more about the difference between these pimples and blackheads.

What is a "whitehead?"

formation of whiteheads

A whitehead is a premature blackhead. We say this because a white head is basically a blackhead that hasn't reached the surface yet. Whiteheads are also known as "closed comedones," this is because the pore is never opened and the substance inside the pore never goes past the surface of the skin. Whiteheads look like bumps under the skin. This congestion under the skin is also called "maturation arrest" acne.

If a whitehead is just a young blackhead, what is the difference between whiteheads and blackheads?

The simple difference between these two blemishes is that a whitehead hasn't reached the surface yet, so there is no discoloration. When the pore opens up to the air, it causes a dark color-without the air, the material that is stuck in the pore remains white and causes bumps.

Adult Male Acne
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the median age of people with acne had risen by almost 23% in 1999. Before 1999 the median age of people with acne was 20.5 years old, after the study - the median age went to 26.5 years old. This study was not subject to either men or women, but rather included both genders. While the general public can tend to categorize acne as a young women's problem, it is important to remember that acne can happen to all ages as well as genders.
Suffering from acne can be just as distressing for men as it is for women and male acne is surprisingly common. Between 25% and 40% of adult men have acne.

Let's talk about what men should watch out for if they suffer from acne.

Bodybuilding/Bulking up

Anabolic Steroids and Protein Supplements

Anabolic steroids can absolutely cause acne to flare up. These flare ups can be fast-onset and very hard to treat. We recommend staying away from steroids or supplements. Also watch out for pre-workout/post-workout powders and pre-made drinks. Lots of iodides can be found in these products and they will create more acne. Protein shakes are very popular with men, be advised to stay away from Whey and Soy protein supplements. Hemp and egg white protein supplements are a safe way to go.

Body and Neck Acne

Males experience more incidences, as well as more severe cases of acne on the back, chest, and neck. This is because men grow more hair in these areas and tend to get irritated follicles from shaving, aftershaves and sweating. Make sure to shower immediately after sweating. This will keep the bacteria and dirt from getting into your pores. Shave with a single blade razor and don't use a rotary shaver that rips the hair out of the follicle. Skip the aftershave, it's mainly alcohol anyway and will just dry out the skin.

Sun Protection

Males are generally less sun savvy than females, but sun exposure and sunburns are just as damaging to acne prone skin in males as they are in women. Make sure to keep your skin protected in the sun. The sun can breakdown your pores which are already compromised by acne and this creates more problems; scarring, dark spots and thicker - tougher skin.
If you are a man that suffers from acne, your best bet in achieving clear skin is to work with an acne specialist. We have over four years of experience treating male acne at SkintherapyAcne Clinic in Salt Lake City, we would love to help you.

Call us today to learn more about our options!

If you are male and you shave your face - you might find that you experience a bumpy rash after trimming your beard. Shaving bumps can be common in men & we see this rashy reaction a lot at Skintherapy Skincare and Acne Clinic of Utah.
If you suffer from Pseudofolliculitis Barbae, shaving bumps or acne on a regular basis - we can help you! Give us a call and schedule an appointment to talk with a trained acne specialist about the best methods to keep your skin clear at all times.
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae is caused by inflammation in the hair follicles. Specifically, shaving bumps happen when hair gets trapped in the follicle. While working with you on treating your breakouts we would suggest some of the following habits.

Never use electric razors

All brands and all models tend to be ultra-irritating no matter how strongly they are advertised to be "gentle" or "made for the neck." Instead use a single blade razor.

Always prep with warm water

If you prepare your face (or any area you're shaving) with warm water, your skin will become more manageable due to hydration. The heat will also soften the hair, making the shaving process easier in the first place.

Use the right products

The right shaving cream will help immensely to ensure that your razor will glide over your skin safely. It is also important to use safe, non pore-clogging face washes to keep your entire face clean before and after you shave. As specialists, we can suggest the best shaving creams as well as provide you with the correct face washes to reduce the potential for irritation.

Go with the grain

You're more likely to get bumps if you tend to shave close. Try to get into the habit of shaving with the grain - this usually means shaving down rather than up.

Use a toner

Toners are post-cleansing products that are designed to get rid of any extra cleanser or dead skin cells that may linger after you wash your face. Our Skintherapy Acne Clinic toners are great to use as after-shaves. We also have moisturizers, mandellic serums and other products formulated with benzoyl peroxide-which can start killing acne-causing bacteria before it gets into your open follicles.

Use Ice

Always ice your face after you shave. Icing is a huge help with inflammation and redness. Ice the area you previously shaved for about 2 minutes.

Tips your Dermatologist never told you

There are many ideas on the best remedies to clear our skin quickly. From minor blemishes to full on acne, we've all tried absurd, fast track ideas that would be sure to clear our skin at the speed of light. Growing up, my friends would tell me to use toothpaste to clear a pimple overnight - it was something about drying the blemish out. I'm not sure if this ever really worked, but after successfully clearing acne prone skin for years, I can confidentially say that there are more efficient ways to clear a blemish or zit quickly than with old school remedies.

Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions on fighting zits fast! Get ready because these aren't your' friends home remedies or simple suggestions from a dermatologist - these are tried and true methods that I, as a professional acne specialist, suggest to clients in my Acne Clinic. Remember though, these are quick tips for clearing zits or minor blemishes only. However, to control acne successfully on the face or body you should plan on putting in a good 3-6 months of work with a therapist who has a history of successfully clearing acne.

Three Rules

What if I already broke the second rule and popped my pimple?

We suggest cleansing the area and patting it dry with a clean towel. Icing the area will help with inflammation both before and after you've popped the pimple. Believe it or not, icing is one of the best remedies for taming redness in acne - its so simple, yet so effective - I bet you never heard that from your dermatologist or girlfriends.

What is the most important thing to do when trying to clear your skin quickly?

DO NOT POP OR PICK AT YOUR FACE! This will only cause scarring and actually spread bacteria throughout your skin. You think that picking will help eliminate the problem, but it actually aggravates your skin and makes things worse.
